The Downfall Of The Tea Party?

February 27 2009 The Birth of the Tea Party...I stood at the foot of Broadway in downtown San Diego with about 300 people who were pissed at a government already out of control. The mood was jubilant, friendly. Cars drove by honking at the homemade signs with slogans like these....

With the exception of one man who tried to run us over with his car while flipping us all "the bird", it was a great morning full of discussion, heated debate and optimism.

I didn't go because Fox News told me to, they didn't even know it was happening. I went because a friend of a friend said a bunch of people were going to protest the Porkulous Bill and would I like to go. That's all. That's what it was about. It was about Government out of control. About Pork. About Big Bad Big Brother pulling my hard earned money out of my pocket and lining the wallet of those who didn't earn it. That really get's me cheesed off.

Taxed Enough Already. T.E.A. It was good fun. It also meant a lot of like minded people could get together and share ideas for electing men and women to office who might actually be the voice of the people they represent.

The left wing media made us out to be racists, bigots, rednecks, homophobes and anti-government whack jobs. When really all we were was good, honest, hardworking Americans who were fed up. We were a melting pot of frustration in every race, creed, color and religion. We were tired of being sidelined by restraint, we wanted our voices heard.

But these days the media's first impression doesn't fall far from the tree in some cases. I have distanced myself from self proclaimed "Patriots" who think saying nigger over and over again just for the hell of it somehow serves as a message against PCBS. The Birthers with their inane litany of "show us your birth certificate". The radical righties who advocate violence. These days I have a hard time separating SOME of the Tea Partiers from the left wing radical freaks who like to throw bricks through military recruiting centers. I mean you know it's bad when even Fox News is linking Timothy McVeigh and Joe Stack, albeit loosely, to the Tea Party Movement.

I want my old TEA Party back. I want those good, honest, decent, law abiding, caring and deeply patriotic people back. I want the intelligent people who want to work to CHANGE Washington back to a representative body by my side again.

And I want the people who've hijacked this movement gone. Or really, this "movement" will have gone nowhere at all.

US Census Waste Of Money

Yesterday at work, a US Census worker came in and asked if she could hang a help wanted sign up in our window. I looked a the sign and my jaw hit the floor. $18.50 an hour to knock on doors? $21.50 an hour to stand outside a grocery store and tell people about the Census? No kidding. Hell I was ready to quit my job right then and there and sign up.

"The Census Bureau wasted millions of dollars in preparation for its 2010 population count, including thousands of temporary employees who picked up $300 checks without performing work and others who overbilled for travel costs."

Typical government.

The thing is, the people we need to fill out the form won't fill it out anyway so what the hell is the point?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we CANNOT ever declare any type of "victory" in Afghanistan unless the boots on the ground are actually ABLE TO FIGHT.

Case in point: 12 "civilians" were killed by NATO forces on Sunday. Civilian being rather subjective. Why were they killed? Did big old mean America kill a bunch of innocent women and children with impunity? Well no actually....

"Afghan Interior Minister Atmar said at the briefing in Lashkar Gah that nine civilians and two or three insurgents were among those killed, suggesting that insurgents were firing at troops from a civilian home.

"The reality is this ... the enemy did capture some civilians in their house and they were firing at our forces from this house. Unfortunately our forces didn't know that civilians were living in that house," he said."

So...our soldiers did their job, killed the enemy and we APOLOGIZE? Sorry all that does is make us look like assholes.

Here are the facts straight up from the one and only type of person I care to listen to about this type of situation:

"The inability to stop people who don't have weapons is the main hindrance right now," said 1st Lt. Gavin McMahon of Brooklyn, N.Y. McMahon. "They know how to use our ROE against us," referring to the Rules of Engagement."

Super Bowl Sunday Fun-Open Thread

It is here, the most holy of days, Super Bowl Sunday.

I started the morning with a jaunt up to the campus (UCSD) for some football fun with my spotted love child, Birdy the Dalmatian. She scored 4 touchdowns and 199 rushing yards. In 2 minutes. She'll be watching the Puppy Bowl this afternoon.

Next I stopped by the grocery store to pick up some Football Food. Chips, dips, wings and things. And the nectar of the gods, Beer.

And now I await the coming of The Game.
